Our story

Behind the name.

Murray McDavid was founded in 1994 by London wine merchants Mark Reynier and Simon Coughlin, together with Gordon Wright of Springbank Distillery. From the beginning, the team looked beyond conventional maturation, exploring how carefully chosen oak and wine casks could open new dimensions in Scotch whisky. The resulting approach became known as its Art of Maturation.

In 2000, the founders took an important step in the revival of Bruichladdich Distillery on Islay, working with master distiller Jim McEwan. After Bruichladdich and Murray McDavid were acquired in 2012, the independent bottling business subsequently passed to the Scottish whisky company Aceo. Its home today is the historic Coleburn Distillery in Speyside.

The brand's collections have showcased malts from distilleries across Scotland. Bottlings such as Mannochmore, Linkwood, Glen Elgin, Teaninich, Dailuaine, Croftengea, and Auchroisk have been paired with bourbon, port, Madeira, Marsala, and peated casks. These combinations are part of the brand's historical portfolio and do not imply that any individual expression is currently in stock.

Each release offers a different conversation between distillery character and the cask that completes its maturation. Murray McDavid's distinctiveness lies in that deliberate pairing: an independent perspective on Scotch whisky that treats oak selection as a creative and sensory discipline.
