Our story

Behind the name.

J.W. Kelly & Co. began with the journey of James Watt Kelly, born in Waterford, Ireland, in 1844. After gaining experience in the wine trade, Kelly brought his commercial ambition to Chattanooga, Tennessee. In 1866, he established his whiskey enterprise and Deep Springs Distillery, helping shape the city's post-Civil War growth as a center of trade, travel, and industry.

Kelly built far more than a whiskey label. His interests connected the distillery to Chattanooga's civic and social life, including the historic Read House, where his business activities extended to hospitality. The story of the original house belongs to the era of river commerce, railways, tobacco, and an ambitious Southern city. That history ended as the American spirits industry changed through the early twentieth century.

The J.W. Kelly name returned in 2017 under Keeper's Quest. The revival draws on original house names, archival materials, and Chattanooga's whiskey heritage while developing expressions for a contemporary audience. The range has included Old Milford Bourbon, Golden Age Rye, Melrose Rye, Silver Springs Sweet Mash Rye, and individual single-barrel releases; historical expressions should not be taken as evidence of present retail availability.

At its heart, the modern J.W. Kelly story is about continuity rather than imitation. It connects an Irish immigrant's nineteenth-century enterprise with modern American whiskey making, preserving a sense of place without requiring every new release to taste the same. Chattanooga remains central to the brand's identity: the people, the city, and the history behind the bottle.
